...is the "minor crime" also a pun in Chinese? Not actually sure whether the incredulity is over minor-as-in-insignificant, minor-as-in-child, or that it could be both.

Oh no, it's not a pun in Chinese at all. It just means minor as in insignificant

The down jacket thing got me thinking: my impression of animal welfare in China is very low, especially for things like chickens for eating and ducks for down. Is there any movement at all towards more ethical animal consumption in China or not really? Would forming some sort of group to advocate for that be the kind of thing the government would clamp down on?

Happy New Year!

Is it common for people to sleep in classrooms and at work?

Yeah, siestas are pretty culturally important, so workplaces generally have a 1.5hr to 2hr "lunch break" where people take a nap after lunch. Some people even bring cots to set up in their office for this purpose. Schools are supposed to have siestas too, but the involution gets bad enough that by the time you get to high school, you're only getting to lay down at your table for 30 minutes at most.

Thanks. The idea of people sleeping in an office or schoolroom is wild to me.
