There's one big National Union that theoretically every worker is in by default, but it's not allowed to actually do anything to fight for worker's rights. Like, it's illegal to go on strike. The only thing Chinese unions do is pass out some gift cards around the holidays, buy you some cheap moon cakes or something.
I'm surprised that they don't pay union fees. In the Soviet Union participation in unions was mandatory and the fee was 1% of a person's salary.
