It's actually paying your parent's living expenses, as a part of "taking care of them in old age", except they're probably not old yet. It's not really rent, and it's not really based on what expenses you incur. It's usually just a certain percentage of your income, or roughly 1500-3000 a month, whichever is higher. Hence why people talk about it as a part of your "filial duty"
