Hi, so curious about the overtime topic. This is pervasive in general? Or confined mainly to manufacturing jobs? Also, is overtime pay itself in China required by law?
It's extremely pervasive in general. People often complain about the 996 work schedule, and that's 9AM to 9PM, 6 days a week. That's pretty common place not just in big tech companies, but also in factories, government work, and now most white collar jobs.
Overtime pay is technically required by law, but I don't know that I've ever seen it enforced. Generally, the company will offer a document for you to sign that says you're voluntarily working overtime and give up your right to any pay. And if you're not willing to sign it, then they'll fire you and hire someone who is willing.
Pretty much all my friends who work in China work some amount of overtime, but I don't know a single person who has ever gotten paid for it.
