10/15/24 - It’s easy to find a 4-5K RMB a month job. But it’s a lot harder to find a job that pays 4-5K USD, right?
“Should I let my two year old change her own name?
I have no idea what’s going on, but she’s been calling herself a strawberry. “Strawberry’s getting up!” “Strawberry fell down!” “Strawberry wants food!” And stuff like that.
Her dad tries to tell her, “You’re not Strawberry. You’re Ying Ying.” [嘤嘤, an onomatopoeia in Chinese for the sound of a baby crying. Basically kind of like naming a kid “Waaah”] And she’ll insist that she’s “Strawberry Ying Ying”.
He’s been really stressed out why she’d change her name. Do we need to do something about this?”
Comments say, “But Strawberry is such a better name than the shit you came up with though! Are you serious with Ying Ying??”
“Do what? She’ll grow out of it. When I was little, I’d grab a wooden sword and wrap a flowery bed sheet around myself and call myself “Fire Phoenix of the East”.”
“I’ve given myself names as a kid too, because I didn’t like my name. Now that I’m older, I don’t even remember what I came up with. Found my homework book the other day, and found that the name I loved so much as a little kid was actually…Bao Hua.” [宝花, treasured flower. It sounds nice, but it’s actually a super hick name in Chinese.]
“Let me tell you about some of the sources of income for wealthy housewives.
One is buying apartments, remodelling them, and then renting them out again. Buy a unit in New York or Paris or Shanghai or Beijing, and you get at least 10K a month in rent, and most wealthy housewives would buy at least three.
Another is to redecorate their mansions as a bed and breakfast. You can make six figures a month off of a fancy B&B in Shanghai. Most tycoons don’t care about small change like that, so the housewives end up running it all themselves.
Like, the wealthy housewives in my social circle often make money by remodelling the houses they own and renting out a chunk, and they make well over 100K a month.
Their husbands don’t care to fiddle with something so finicky, so it’s only housewives getting into this business. Plus, real estate in core areas is still pretty valuable, so all these mansions are good investments. Most tycoons end up investing at least 9 figures into real estate.
(When I get married, I’d at most just manage my other real estate, rent it out, and maybe convert a mansion into a B&B.)
#Let’s marry up together.”
Comments say, “This is like saying that the fastest way to make a million dollars is to save 50 million into the bank at 2% interest.”
“Turning a mansion into a B&B is going to affect the whole vibe of the neighbourhood. The HOA won’t agree, the other homeowners won’t agree, and your neighbours will definitely never agree.”
“Turn a mansion into a B&B? You think the HOA would let you? I’m not even allowed to trim my own trees in my own yard.”
#Media comments on teacher suspended after freaking out in group chat. #Mental health of teachers is a big problem. “According to media reports, on the 14th of October, head teacher Mr. Xu in Chongqing’s Southwest University’s associated middle school seemed to become emotionally agitated and commented in his class group chat, “Fuck off, all of you!” After screenshots of the texts were spread around on social media, it immediately attracted a lot of attention. Many commenters aimed their accusations at the head teacher, and the middle school soon responded publicly that they have suspended Mr. Xu’s educational work for now and will resolve the situation after further investigation.
Although we’re not sure why this head teacher began swearing in the parents group chat, as a teacher, especially as a head teacher, he should’ve kept his temper in check no matter how emotional he was getting, and definitely shouldn’t act so inappropriate in a work group chat. A head teacher is a role model for behaviour in the eyes of many students. If even head teachers have no concept of manners or politeness, that wouldn’t be a very good influence on his students. Therefore, it seems reasonable that the school would suspend him. And he can’t complain about facing disapproval on the internet either.
But we shouldn’t merely stop at criticising this one teacher. We should think deeper about the problems behind this event. Of course, the teacher involved should be dealt with for his inappropriate behaviour, but teachers should receive the proper amount of care in regards to their mental health and stress level too. Many head teachers in top middle schools are complaining online about how much stress they are under. They often have to deal with a ton of hassle, a lot of annoyance, and it’s easy to get emotional sometimes. It’s hard to maintain inner peace. In this event, the reason this teacher acted so inappropriately is surely due to his emotions too.
From this point of view, society needs to pay more attention to teachers’ mental health and help them maintain stable emotions. The public expects educators to have an even temper and a stable mindset. But in reality, a lot of factors means that it might be hard for teachers to control their emotions and end up exploding in an inappropriate way, hurting both themselves and their students and parents.
In the most extreme cases of an explosive outburst from a teacher, they may even end up violently hurting children. In June of 2023, a daycare teacher in Shanxi became upset while rehearsing for a performance and shoved many children to the ground. He was fired as a result and the daycare director was suspended afterwards. In October of 2023, a teacher in Tieling was show slapping and kicking her students. These things have taught us a deep lesson. A lot of these teachers might not hold much ill will towards their students. It was probably just a moment of impulsiveness that blinded them to how to appropriately punish students, creating a irrecoverable catastrophe in the end.
In response, schools should pay more attention to teachers’ emotional states, and make sure to guide and support them in their daily work, increasing their ability to manage their own emotions. At the same time, schools need to listen to teachers more and not continue to put more pressure on them. Learn about the difficulties teachers face in the course of their work and try to improve their environment and solve their issues.
Of course, in order to avoid these incidents continue to repeat, teachers need to remind themselves constantly that it’s normal to be emotional, but you can’t vent it on your students or their parents. Improving your manner and training your spirit is a part of the job of an educator.”
Comments say, “Students, parents, teachers, schools…but teachers are the only ones getting hurt and scapegoated.”
“Who’s actually gonna solve teachers’ mental health problems though?”
“You sure went on and on about how teachers’ emotional breakdowns is a big problem, but why don’t you ever address why they’re getting so emotional?”
“Finished a 10 inch cake by myself—what power level am I at?
It was a huge box when I went to pick it up. Super heavy. Calmly took it home and locked the door, and cleaned off my plate in 36 minutes. Looks like I still underestimated myself.”
Comments say, “Forget about whether or not you can stuff it all down—how do you not get sick by the end!?”
“Oh my god! It is an injustice that I am fat!”
“I’m so jealous of your terabyte stomach T_T”
Question: “Inflation isn’t even 10% in America. Why are people acting like it’s such a big deal?”
A compilation of various answers: “It’s pretty scary, honestly. A dozen eggs used to be 0.99 USD back in 2019, and now it’s usually 3.99 USD. America chose to give out all kinds of handouts during covid, so inflation is an inevitability. There’s no way the American government didn’t see this coming. Inflation sucks, but if they didn’t give out subsidies, then a lot of small businesses would have to close down, and there’d be a ton of unemployment. That’s even scarier.”
“Everyone is memeing, but I’m actually upset. Because I’m actually in New York. And I actually ordered from McDonalds the other day. And it actually cost me 35 USD.” [The order was 1 big mac meal with large fries and coke ($16.18), 10 piece nuggies ($7.29), and 1 McChicken, just the sandwich ($4.89).]
“If you didn’t use any coupons, you’d spend 13.5+13.5+13.9+30 RMB on that same meal in China. But you’d get an extra coke.”
“Just ordered exactly what you got on Meituan [takeout app] and it cost me 84 RMB.“
“You can get these on Xianyu for less than 50 RMB.”
“I hear Xianyu has some mindblowing connections. They’ve got deals where they can get stuff for super cheap.”
“You can’t buy this for less than 80 RMB in China. Make USD, spend 35 USD. Make RMB, spend 80 RMB. Which is worse?”
“No, no, no, you only need 50 RMB to buy all of these, and it’s easy to find a 4-5K RMB a month job. But it’s a lot harder to find a job that pays 4-5K USD, right?”
“How is it so expensive now!? They still had 1.5USD burgers back when I was there!”
“It’s all fake news. American has free shoplifting, so it doesn’t matter how much things cost. You guys are all just jealous. If you wanna go cross the border, don’t hesitate. Go to America and let everyone be jealous of you.”
“Government official aunt tells me the evilest way to screw someone over.
Take advantage of the rules.
A truck driver was delivering a bunch of materials and specifically weighed himself before setting off and he wasn’t overweight. But once he got to the weighing station, they insisted that he was overweight by 50%. And no matter how he tried to argue, they confiscated his car and fined him for 2000 RMB. But when he paid his fine and came to get his car back, he brought along witnesses and lawyers with him. Once they weighed the car at a fair place, the driver said, “I’m missing half the materials on my truck. It says on this ticket right here that I was overweight by 50%, but I can’t find the overweight part at all!” And so he sued the weighing station. In the end, the weighing station people said they accidentally lost the trucker’s cargo and had to pay him a couple hundred thousand.
2. Dirty someone else’s hands.
A rich man was just returning home from a business trip when he discovered his wife in the bedroom with another man. So he quietly backed out again and locked the door. Then he calmly called his MIL and said, “Mom, help! Your daughter’s locked herself in the bedroom and wants to commit suicide!” In less than 10 minutes, the MIL’s entire family showed up in three cars and they kicked down the door.
3. Break the rules.
A young man accidentally burned three small holes in the carpet of his hotel room. When he went to check out, the workers said that according to hotel regulations, he had to pay 100 bucks in damages for each hole. The young man asked, “Are you sure it’s 100 bucks for each hole?” And the worker answered, “Yes, sir.” So the young man lit up a cigarette and burned the three small holes into one big hole and paid 100 bucks.
4. Reverse psychology.
My friend bought eight 125g hairy crabs on the internet, but when they arrived, they were less than 75 grams each. And the seller never responded to his messages. So he went to the market and bought twelve 200g hairy crabs, took a photo, and left a review saying that this seller’s crabs are huge and amazing. Every single one was overweight at 200g, and he even got 4 free extras. Three days later, the store shut down, because every other buyer started filing complaints and demanding refunds because what they got wasn’t nearly as nice as his, and they never got any free gifts!”
“There’s a question on Zhihu, “Is it hard these days to find a girl who’ll work hard with you?”
There are 6847 replies under this question.
Interestingly, there’s another question on Zhihu: “If Zuckerberg is so rich, why would he marry such an ordinary-looking woman? Surely, there are tons of women after him.”
There are 3955 replies under this question.
I feel like these two questions and answers can show the cognitive dissonance in some people’s hearts:
When I’m poor, I complain that no one is willing to help me. When I’m rich, I’m going to drown myself in beauty and youth.
From the logic of the first question, they should be jealous that Zuckerberg was able to find a wife who was willing to fight with him and support him when he was poor. And yet, most people just think that Zuckerberg’s wife is ugly.
More interestingly, the vast majority of these people, the vast majority, adamantly believe that they’re entitled to having a girl who works hard with them.
So I think, no matter who it is, you can’t believe what people say all the time.”
Comments say, “Such typical vampires. They’re trying to suck other people’s blood to benefit themselves no matter what stage of life they’re in. Even if they were wealthy and sleeping with hot girls, they’d still be asking, “Do I have to spend money to get a young, beautiful girl?””
“Wang Shi, Wang Wei, Stanley Ho, Li Jiacheng…so many bloody examples right there. Why would I work with you? Why not just work on myself? If I helped you, I might lose my life, and end up with my soul sealed too.”
“I’ve happened upon both of these questions too. I don’t like the gender war either, but if I read too much Zhihu, I really do start hating men…”
