#Wuhan University withdraws Xiao’s Citation. “Lately, the conflict between Xiao —Dao and Yang —Yuan has drawn a lot of social attention. The Wuhan University Investigation and Review Committee has fairly and justly fully investigated and reviewed Xiao’s rule citation and Yang’s thesis. The report is as below.
One, the investigation and review into Xiao’s rule citation.
Regarding Xiao’s rule citation, the school organised a group of experts (including three outside experts, two internal experts, led by an outside expert) reviewed 91 pieces of documentation including paper documents, electronic documents, audio recordings, video, and pictures. They interviewed 21 related personnel and investigated the actual scene of the incident and confirmed various details using key evidence.
On the 17th of September, 2025, Wuhan Mid-Level People’s Court has made its second ruling on Yang’s sexual harassment lawsuit against Xiao and decided to maintain the first ruling (25th of July, Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone People’s Court denied all of Yang’s demands). The school respects the legal judgements, and in combination with the review, we have decided to withdraw Xiao’s Citation.
Two, the review into Yang’s thesis.
Yang’s thesis title was, “An Economic Analysis of the Influence of Domestic Violence on Reproductive Behaviour in China and India.” In April of 2024, the school submitted the paper to relevant agencies to check for academic fraud. The match percentage of the thesis is 1.9%, fitting with the school’s requirement that, “The total paper and various passages have a match rate of smaller than 10%, and the citation part has a match rate of 30%.” In April, three outside experts performed a double-blind review and all three experts approved of the thesis. In May, the five experts on the Master’s Degree Thesis Defense Committee voted to agree to give Yang her Master’s Degree. In June, the school’s Diploma Committee held a meeting and agreed to give Yang her Master’s Degree Diploma.
After the public reaction, the school organised experts to review Yang’s Master’s Degree thesis to in August of 2025, split into two stage. In the first stage, 17 internal experts were split into 5 groups to review each point of doubt brought up on the internet and read and review the thesis in its entirety. In the second stage, an additional expert committee is built (5 people, 3 out of school, 2 in school) and reviews data, replicates proof, and reviewed Yang’s Master’s Degree thesis from choice of topic to process of work to method of research to conclusion to writing style. After review, the expert committee believed that Yang’s thesis topic was rather creative, the statistical methods she used were appropriate, and the conclusion she arrives at matches the data. The thesis used over 190,000 points of data. There were a couple of graphs where the results differ from the text, but it doesn’t affect the main conclusion. No academically fraudulent behaviour like plagiarism or data editing were detected. At the same time, experts have found that Yang’s thesis has about a hundred places were it was written poorly, whether there were grammatical mistakes, poor citations, bad formatting, inaccurate translations, or inaccurate analysis.
In August of 2025, the school held a Diploma Assessment Committee, which decided to maintain Yang’s Master’s Degree Diploma in accordance to the People’s Republic of China Diploma Policy and Wuhan University’s diploma policies.
The “double blind” expert pointed out in regards to Yang’s thesis that, “It has a lot of standardisation problems” and suggested further editing. The thesis defense committee also made some edit suggestions, but Yang only made some of the edits. The instructor did not maintain strict standards on this thesis, and the Economics and Management school did not strictly review the thesis, causing the thesis to have many formatting errors.
Three, the responsibility of workers and workplaces.
Based on the results of the investigation, in accordance with the Chinese Communist Party Discipline Policy, the Chinese Communist Party Responsibility Policy, Postgrad Instruction Behaviour Guidelines, Wuhan University Diploma Assessment Committee Guidelines, and other related policies, the school’s party committee has decided to issue an in-party warning to the Party Committee Student Work Department’s Director, Li, for inappropriately mediating student conflict, failing to educate students on daily life, and not putting enough care into managing students causing a negative influence. A warning is issued to Foreign Languages Undergrad Student Education Management Party Committee Deputy Secretary Liu. An in-party warning is issued to Economics and Management School Postgrad Education and Management Deputy Secretary Xie. The Party Committee Student Work Departmentand Foreign Languages School Party Committee has been ordered to submit a written reflection and perform reforms for not managing student work well. For the main party responsible for educaton postgrads, Yang’s instructor Guo —Fei, he has been talked to and banned from accepting postgrad students for two years. The Economics and Management School Postgrad Education Deputy Director Liu —Qing has been given a lecture for failing in their managerial duties. The Economics and Management School Diploma Assessment Committee has been asked to submit a written reflection and perform reforms for failing to properly review thesis quality. The Economics and Management School Party Committee has been asked to submit a written reflection and perform reforms for failing in their duties to educate postgrad students.
There were rumours online that “Yang’s thesis was rated as an Exceptional Thesis.” Investigation showed that Wuhan University did not select any Exceptional Theses in 2024. There were rumours that, “Wuhan University has allowed Yang to edit her Master’s Degree Thesis.” Investigation showed that the school has asked Yang to provide the original data and code to her thesis in the review process, which does not involve editing her thesis. The were rumours that, “Internet bullying has caused Xiao to stop going to school.” Investigation showed that Xiao is normally participating in schooling and it has never been interrupted. There were rumours that, “A certain alumni of Wuhan University has started an alumni petition asking for a withdrawal of hte citation and investigation into academic fraud.” Or that, “Yang’s uncle is an Academic Fellow at Wuhan University.” Or, “An instructor named Guo who did the interviews was a student of Yang’s dad.” Or, “Yang worked together with Deng to write her thesis.” These are all false information. And after confirming with the police, the rumours that the internet bullying Xiao suffered has caused his grandpa to pass away or go into a coma are also untrue information.
Wuhan University is going to deeply reflect and learn from this, strengthen the education of its children, make teachers more responsible, improve the academic system, and pursue a culture of caution and the pursuit of excellence. We are going to increase the quality of the students we are education and the level of our education management.
We are grateful to all sections of society for caring, supervising, and criticising Wuhan University.”
Comments say, “There’s finally a final result.”
“Thank God we have the internet.”
“A very clear investigation.”

A discussion of why young people hate Xiangqin [A type of Chinese dating where a matchmaker or your parents set you up with somebody and you have a meeting where you set out all your criteria very up front and quickly decide if you’re going to be together or not.]:
“Because the purpose is too clear, like we’re gonna end up in bed. Forget girls, even as a guy, it makes me uncomfortable.”
“Xiangqin is too fast. You have to decide whether to confirm the relationship within a couple of meetings, and if you hesitate, they’re gonna move onto the next one. Honestly, just a few meetings isn’t enough to tell what type of person the other side is, so how are you supposed to confirm a relationship?”
“What I’m annoyed with isn’t Xiangqin, it’s that the matchmaker and your parents are going to keep asking did you guys talk? What did you talk about? Did he ask you on a date? And as soon as you go on one date, they’re like, well? Can you get together? And if you’ve met up and had a meal together, then your parents think you’re together.”
“I’m a guy and I only started Xiangqin this year. I think the the people I meet through Xiangqin, I can treat just like friends, we can just get to know each other. But because we met through Xiangqin, I always have weird feelings about them. Like, my subconscious makes it so that all the normal chatting topics feels incredibly awkward.”
“I don’t hate Xiangqin, I just hate parents interfering too much. Like if you agree to Xiangqin, your parents are going to think you’re boyfriend-girlfriend now, and they keep pushing you on progress and think that you can get married after a couple of months at most.”
“I stayed two days in Shigatse and one day in Lhasa. I picked pretty decent-looking hotels, like this 4-star suite in Shigatse in my video. It’s got a great view and two oxygen diffusion devices. But, I still feel pretty severe oxygen deprivation indoors. It’s worse off than if I’m outdoors.
If I stay indoors for a whole night, my blood oxygen level will drop to 60%. At rest, my heart rate is above 120. My muscles are sore, I have a headache, low fever, and early symptoms of brain and lung swelling.”
I’m staying at a chain hotel in Saga County right now, and in this Orange Hotel, my blood oxygen content has never went below 85% and my heart rate didn’t go above 90. This is the best night I’ve spent in Tibet so far. I had a good sleep.
So I strongly suggest people travelling in Tibet to pick a chain hotel. They’re more standardised. Modern oxygen diffusion devices need regular maintenance and filter changes.”
Comments say, “If your blood oxygen is at 60 in Shigatze, then maybe don’t stay on the plateau anymore. It’s just not for you.”
“Blood oxygen 60??? Then aren’t you almost dead??”
“Blood oxygen 60? How did you get that number? How are you still alive?”
What did Xiao do?
