Honestly speaking, 14-years-old is too low. A 14-year-old isn’t even allowed to register an MMORPG account by themselves, and they have to deal with the underaged minor anti-addiction system [which limits you to 1 hour of gaming a week]. A 14-year-old really can’t understand and consent to sex.
16-years-old is a pretty common age of consent age around the globe. Most states in America have age of consent at 18, some at 17, and a small minority at 16.
But, there’s two big pieces of context for age of consent.
First of all, it has to apply to both boys and girls. If a boy has sex with an older woman when they’re under the age of consent, whether they agreed to it or not, the adult woman should be held responsible for sexually assaulting a child. There was a story a while back about a female teacher in Shanghai having relations with a boy in middle school. If we raise age of consent, then both boys and girls can be the victims of sexual assault, and she should have gone to prison too.
Second, we should exempt underage minors from the law. Like if two kids of the same age, or one is 16 and one is 15, has sex, then neither party is held responsible. We usually only see one side as harming the other if there’s more than a 4 year age gap. Like if the girl is 13 and the boy is 17, or the boy is 14 and the girl is 18, then it’s very obvious that the older party is sexually assaulting the younger one by taking advantage of their youth and ignorance.
A lot of male commenters are anxious not because they are thirsting after teenage girls, but because false accusations are already commonplace enough. If we raise age of consent laws, then we’ve opened another door for false accusations.
But raising it to 16 shouldn’t increase risks for normal people.
Most men with normal values wouldn’t be going after 16-year-old girls when they’re in their 20s or 30s. Any adult man who’s constantly hanging out with underage girls is a scumbag. Similarly, any adult woman who’s hunting in underage boy circles is also a scumbag.
Take these two conditions into account.
