A compilation of encounters with rich people:
“Back when I interned in Shanghai, I got tipped by a customer for his New Year’s Party. He’d wracked up 8000+ for a single meal. When he left, he told me that I looked really young and thanked me for my friendly service and wished me a Happy New Year.”
“When I was a waitress, I had a fight with my boyfriend. I wanted him to make it up to me but he just ignored me and told me to calm down. And then a couple came in and ordered over 10,000RMB of food. I overheard that it was because the girl didn’t get the selfie she wanted and was in a bad mood so he wanted to make her feel better. Who gets it…T_T”
“I’m really jealous of people who can spend this much money in a single night. I’ve seen someone spend 10K on tissues at a bar.” [Receipt for a bar where someone had ordered tens of bottles of super expensive alcohol, coming out to a total of a little over 2 million RMB.]
“Around New Years, I was at Lujiazui, just sitting by the side of the street and wandering by myself. A couple of middle-aged and younger guys came up in a luxury car, probably just done with their New Years meal, and threw two red pockets at me and left. I took it home and counted it out and there was 3000RMB inside each red pocket. (They must’ve taken pity on me all alone on a winter night XD)”
“The first time I’ve received a tip as a waitress, this really pretty girl was having a birthday party, and she had five or six butterflies like these on her cake. I sang Happy Birthday for her and they cut up the cake and one of the guys gave me a butterfly. I was just shocked and didn’t know what to say.” [The butterfly is made of origami with 100RMB bills, looks to be about 200RMB?]
“You don’t have to be jealous of rich people. We might not have money, but at least we’re exhausted.”
“I was working in Haidilao [hotpot chain] and a couple of super pretty girls came in. It was obvious at a glance that they were raised really well. They ordered whatever they wanted. They sounded about the same age as me, and they were talking about going overseas for the holidays and what new handbag they bought, and I’m serving them food and pouring them water. I’ve never wanted to cry more in my life.”
“I don’t even mean to compare sometimes. I just can’t help but notice the difference.”
“Honestly, real rich people don’t care how much things cost at all. I dated a really rich guy in high school. At the time, I actually cared about not taking advantage of him, but he just stuffed an 80K necklace in my hand as we were getting out of class. He said he’d rather people be gold diggers, because at least it’d be easier to make them happy…”
“Reading this comment section makes me feel like there’s no such thing as strength through hard work. There are only people born in Rome.”
“Their parents worked hard back in the day.”
“Our parents worked hard back in the day too, but they still don’t have any money today.”
“If hard work was all it took, everyone in China would be rich.”
“The first lesson you learn in society: know your place.”
“I used to work part time at Uniqlo and a customer bought over 40 pieces of clothing. She told her daughter, “Uniqlo has the cheapest clothes. You can just wear them once and toss them away. Just make do for a week or two and we don’t have to bring any of this home.””
“T_T I’m a uni student and every time I go to the mall, I only dare to shop at Uniqlo, and I only occasionally buy a piece or two.”
“Working in the service industry really highlights the distance between people. When I sold clothes, I’d remark at how people buy such expensive clothes without blinking an eye. When I was a livestreamer, this guy bought 10 necklaces at 80K each to support another livestreamer.”
“I was at Mixue and had just had a fight with my boyfriend because I wore lolita and he thought it was embarrassing. And the very next day, I saw a couple come in, and the girl was wearing a super cute lolita dress, and she mentioned how she wanted the ring for 520 [20th of May, a newfangled Valentine’s Day that’s sprung up when people decided “520” sounds like “I love you”] and the guy actually bought 60 lemonades to get 20 ring lootboxes for her to pick from. I saw the guy going around with all the lemonades, giving them out to delivery drivers and street sweepers…”
“It’s okay, baby. 60 lemonades is only 300RMB. You don’t have to rely on other people for your happiness. You can get it for yourself.”
“It’s okay, they’re spending money to get something that makes them happy, and we can spend money on the same amount of happiness. For example, they can spend 2000RMB on a mug they like, and we can spend 20RMB and still get a mug we like. The price is different, but the happiness is the same. One rose and a hundred roses aren’t that different.”
“Went through a lot of comments to finally find one I’m happy with.”
#Jiang Yurong claims her dad hasn’t contacted her after his divorce. “Lately, Qingdao girl Jiang Yurong became the first Chinese female valedictorian in Harvard’s history, and gave a speech about “Our Humanity” at her graduation ceremony. Jiang Yurong accepted Jiupai News’ interview regarding the attention she’s drawn on the internet:
Jiupai: “Can you tell us a bit about your family?”
Jiang Yurong: “My parents divorced when I was young and my dad basically never contacts me. We live very far apart and we each have our own lives. I drifted around with my mom a lot, moving a lot and changing schools a lot. I was randomly assigned to a middle school in Qingdao that wasn’t all that great. My classmates were mostly all children of workers from out of state, or small business owners. A lot of classmates have to help out with their parents’ business before and after school. The only thing I could do during those days was study. Read all the books I can get my hands on, and try to find the answer to the world in them.”
Jiupai: “Tell us about your academic journey.”
Jiang Yurong: “I was born in Qingdao, and after completing middle school in China, I went to England for high school. I went to university in Warwick and transferred to Duke in Junior year, and then came to Harvard. In the Zhongkao [like the Gaokao but for getting into high school], I got into the top high school in Qingdao without any additional points [that you get for being an ethnic minority or having a unique talent like piano or sprinting or something]. The next year, I passed the GCSE and got admitted to one of the most prestigious high schools in England without any connections.””
Comments say, ““How did she get work with the Green Development Committee?”
“Lol, a normal middle class family sending their kids overseas for high school?”
“Doesn’t contact me much, divorced family. Holy shit, is this just a fake divorce so he can get himself a second kid?”
#Second round of Russia Ukraine talks are over. “I feel like Ukraine celebrated too early!
Ukraine thought they hit Russia’s airforce bases and now they can stand up tall. But actually, Ukraine screwed up!
I watched all the videos, and although it’s not as impressive as Ukraine is trying to make it sound, saying that 40 bombers were destroyed, they definitely did blow up at least 4 or 5. This is going to make a huge impact on Russia, not only in terms of damages to its air force, but also in negotiations going forward.
Once something like this has happened, if Russia doesn’t completely crush Ukraine, then they’re going to have to deal with a lot of angry people domestically. That’s right. Once things get to this point, the only thing Russia can do is completely destroy Ukraine, or else they can’t answer to their people!
Honestly, this incident doesn’t really matter much to the overall war. What’s actually going to decide this war is the ground troops on the front lines. Ukraine’s really pissed Russia off this time, and there’s going to be revenge for sure. As for what the revenge looks like, I’m sure Russia’s making their plans. Either way, this is going to be a lot worse than the couple of air strikes on Kiev a few days ago. So, Ukraine is celebrating too early!”
Comments say, “If they could destroy Ukraine, they would’ve done it a long time ago.”
“Russia’s been sucking for so long. What they need is the motivation to actually take Ukraine out in one blow.”
“Henan people are spouting bullshit again. Isn’t it normal to fight back against invaders?”
