[I meant to do this yesterday. I even made a note to myself to do it while typing my post up, and some how still managed to forget. My brain sucks. Anyways, if there’s any context you feel like you’re missing, or anything you’ve always wanted to know about China, submit your questions here! I’ll do my best to answer them! Thank you guys for all of your support! You’re the greatest!]
Under the trending hashtag #boys can’t empathise with moms, a blogger writes, “Boys’ attitudes towards their moms is a direct reflection of daddy’s attitude towards their moms. Based on my observation, the better dad treats mom, the more their son respects mom. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter how hard the mom works, the son will be coldblooded and numb and uncaring.
I’ve got a friend who’s an executive manager at a company, makes at least a million a year. Theoretically, she’d get a lot of respect from her son with this kind of “strong, career woman” persona, right?
But no. Her son is in fifth grade, and still throws himself to the ground in tantrums, makes the house into a total mess, and even PUAs her, “You’re a failure because you didn’t take good enough care of me!”
Now let’s look at her marriage: her husband is 3 years younger than her, decent looks, but got a very average job. All he does all day is play video games.
My friend is busy at work, and does most of the childcare herself (she has a maid, but the maid only does housework chores).
She’s exhausted every day, but her son doesn’t feel bad for her at all. If he’s the slightest bit upset, he’ll throw a huge tantrum.
She tries to correct him, and reason with him, does everything in her power. But it’s useless. Her son doesn’t care what she says at all. He just looks to see what daddy does.
Imitate daddy, understand daddy, become daddy.
Every family where the husband gets treated like a child, and the son gets treated like a lover is like this. They think they can raise their son to be their lover, but when their husband is a huge manbaby, their son won’t love them at all.
They’re lucky if the son doesn’t grow up to hate them.”
Comments say, “So scary. But what if the mom abandoned them and made them feel threatened? Would it get better? I feel like people push boundaries all the time because they know you’ll put up with them no matter what.”
“This is probably a genetic problem. He inherited it from dad.”
“Question, how would the son feel about mom in this case? Dad doesn’t love mom (at least, they’re not lovey dovey visibly), but he’ll do his share of housework, and brings all of his money home. He’s got a bit of a temper and likes to chew people out, but he actively participates in childcare. He’s a great dad and a great son, he just doesn’t care about his wife and always puts his son first. The wife is just a tool for making money and babysitting.”
“TFW my AIDS patient wants a second baby.
I’m doing my regular home visits again, and I’ve got a HIV-positive male patient, and I asked him if he plans to have another kid. And he was like, “I want one, but there’s no one to take care of it.” And I was like, “Yeah, if you don’t have childcare worked out, you shouldn’t have another baby. You’ve still got to drive your older one to school and pick them up. But it’s okay, I only have one daughter. Out of the six nurses who drew your blood, four of them had daughters. Even the two doctors who treated you had daughters. You’re not the only one without a son, what do you have to worry about? Daughters are great. Just focus on making money and raising her, and she’ll still grow up to buy you good cigarettes and good liquor. Times are changing now. Daughters can continue your lineage too.””
Comments say, “There’s drugs for it nowadays, right? I just still think it’s a bad idea. Like, I’m a useless piece of trash at 20-something-years-old, still relying on my family to support me. I can’t imagine how I’d survive if I lost them.”
“What’s the point?”
“What’s having a second baby got to do with daughters or sons?”
“If a family has two children, an older brother and a younger sister.
The brother wants to get married, but his girlfriend wants a high bride price and he can’t afford it. As a parent, they have no choice but to wait for the younger sister to get married and give her bride price to her brother. But the sister’s boyfriend can’t afford a bride price either.
In this event, is it the family who’s oppressing women? Or is it women who are hurting women?
Everyone is free if you don’t charge high bride price.”
Comments say, “Jiangxi is like this. Their bride price is crazy high, but it doesn’t reach the girl’s parents’ hands at all. It all goes to her brother as his bride price.”
“Is this literally not just a transfer payment?”
“What if they have two boys?”
“I’m concerned about major current events, but I honestly don’t understand it most of the time.
I didn’t understand China’s real estate industry collapse. I thought the government did it deliberately, to cut off real estate developers’ cash flow. For an industry that relies on high liquidity, it’s fatal to get their loans cut off. That’s why most developers went bankrupt without fail.
Before, I thought the government just screwed up. They cut it off wrong, or cut it off too sharply.
Lately, I read a lot of analysis about real estate, and I think I’ve got my thoughts more ordered. I’ve got a new point of view now.
The reason Chinese real estate companies failed is because nobody’s buying houses anymore, not because the government put more strict standards on giving out loans. Basically, the amount of income in the real estate industry is dropping sharply, causing developers’ cash flow to shrink. Their income no longer covers their debts, so they die off. What the government did only helped things along. In fact, they even gave developers plenty of warning and support. They were required to lower their debt ratio from several years ago so they could save their life now. If that’s true, then the government’s really been incredibly forgiving towards developers.
But the whole industry is still basically dead now. That can’t be helped.
The most amazing part is, a major pillar like the real estate industry has shrunk by half, but our economy is still growing. If you believe what I say, then you should be even more impressed by the CCP and by China. It takes governing abilities beyond human comprehension to achieve this kind of result. Not even “deciding on victory from a thousand miles away” is sufficient to describe it [a line from history used to describe one of its most brilliant tacticians, Zhang Liang].
Of course, I’m guessing most people don’t think so. They still think the government screwed up. But take a look at history. The CCP’s never made low-level mistakes that normal people can point out.”
Comments say, “What the fuck is that last paragraph? I thought you always insisted that the zero covid policy was a mistake?”
“What analysis did you read? There’s a ton of bloggers writing about this on weibo, and I don’t know who to believe.”
“Yeah, the CCP really is great, but they’ve left hundreds of millions of home purchasers out in the cold as a direct result of their decision to increase price to decrease inventory. If they changed it to the government covering everything, I don’t know how many people would be comforted.”
On the 28th of April, in Henan, Changtan, the police reported a case of a woman being beaten in a public bathroom. In the early morning of 24th of April, Shi and Xia ran into Dong on a commercial street in Changtan. They dragged her into a public bathroom and gave her to Cui, who yanked Dong around and beat her in pursuit of thrills, and forced Dong to smoke his cigarette. Shi and Xia filmed the whole thing on their phone and urged Cui on. Afterwards, they sent the video to Cui. After police investigation, all four individuals involved were jailed for 13 days for disturbing the public peace, and fined 1000 RMB.
Comments say, “Holy shit, what a light sentence.”
“I knew the law was meant to protect bad people.”
“What the fuck kind of judge ruled on this case? I hope God makes sure his mother, wife, and daughter experiences this too.”
A compilation of Chinese conspiracy theories about….Chinese historical development?
“Before 1800, they didn’t even have dictionaries. They burned down Yuanming Yuan in 1860 and robbed China of all our science books, and then western science exploded. You really believe Mendeleev dreamed the periodic table in 1869? The reality is, Britain and France stole all of China’s scientific research, but they weren’t capable of absorbing and translating all of it by themselves, so they united all of Europe to digest it all.”
“It was only after burning down Yuangming Yuan that Newton first appeared, and Maxwell’s work is all based on Newton. Isn’t that ridiculous? And all that bullshit about Einstein inventing the theory of relativity? It’s all translated from China’s scientific research.”
“After Britain and France robbed Yuanming Yuan of all its scientific research, in January of 1865, Kekule discovered the structure of benzene in his dreams. Mendeleev dreamed the periodic table in 1869. And Tesla dreamed the AC motor in 1883. What other major scientific discoveries did whities make in their dreams? I’m happy to take everyone’s contributions. 1. Descartes invented analytic geometry in his dreams. Now we know that Descartes didn’t exist, he’s just the penname of the Masonists who translated Chinese documents. 2. Elias Howe invented the industrial sewing machine in his dream in 1845. 3. Otto Loewi discovered acetylcholine in his dreams. 4. Germans magically discovered pancreatic cells in 1869, and in 2019, Frederick Banting dreams treating diabetes with insulin. 5. Watson saw the structure of DNA in his dreams in 1953.”
“Einstein refused Chinese universities’ invitation to come give lectures on his theory of relativity, not because he looked down on China, but he was worried about being discovered. He didn’t know that most people in China haven’t heard of the Yongle Encyclopaedia either [compiled in early Ming Dynasty under the orders of Emperor Judy, somehow a favourite target of conspiracies]. If someone demanded to know how he thought of the theory of relativity and figured out he’d copied it from the Yongle Encyclopaedia, his career would be over. After all, it’s only been 50 years since they stole China’s science.”
“Why was the Ming Dynasty called Ming? [Meaning “bright” in Chinese]. It’s not like all that Qing slander, that it has something to do with the Ming cult. Our Ming Dynasty was the first Empire of the Sun in the world, where the sun never set on its soil. Our territory ranged from Eastern Europe to North and South America. We received tribute from countries all over the world.”
“Stay away from people who eat Japanese food and drink ice water and eat raw meat. Their disease is contagious.”
“The “depression” that western doctors talk about is just a stomach issue. It’s just a result of eating too much western fast food. My mood is so much more optimistic and happy today.”
“Western doctors are only just figuring out now that tumours are denser and colder than normal human tissue. Chinese Medicine doctors have known since 5000 years ago that Yin can take on form, and cancer is just solid coldness (yin). People rely on chi to be alive, and tumour are more dense, so the chi can’t pass through, and it gets cold, and it makes the chi flow even more stagnant. People get less and less of chi, and eventually die. So how do you prevent cancer? With Yang energy. So all those people exercising in air-conditioned rooms and eating protein powder and vitamin supplements are just draining their Yang energy and stuffing their body full of stuff invented by the west to cause cancer. It’s fine to use these fitness nuts as entertainment. They’re just consumables. Just make sure not to copy them.”
“Why are drugs more and more mainstream in the west? Because all of their lifestyle habits are yin and cold. Their body gets colder and colder, and they don’t know how to relieve it. Doing drugs is a way to squeeze Yang out of people, and they think that solves the problem. They don’t understand that doing too much drugs will squeeze your source of Yang dry. You get high in the short term and feel healthier, but you’ll die by the mid-stage. We’ll get to see the fall of the west in our generation.”
“Inflation and deflation are a binary system based off of western theology. It doesn’t apply to countries with highly efficient manufacturing, like China.”
what the zero -> that the zero
treats more -> treats Mom
standard son -> standards on
In some of the things you post it seems people are talking very frankly about sexual matters, but in others there seems to be a lot of disapproval of any such thing (e.g. being horrified by two university students kissing in a cafeteria). What is the state of openness about sex?
There seems to be a lot of racism directed towards black people -- is that representative of China's attitude generally, or is it just the internet being the internet?
