04/26/25 - We have to work 10 days in a row, get 2 days off, then come back and work another 8 days
#Work 4 rest 5 work 4 “There are people with only one day weekends. I have to work 10 rest 5 and work 5. Who the hell invented makeup work days.”
[OP attaches her schedule for upcoming Labour Week holidays, where she has to work continuously from the 21st of April to the 30th of April, and get 1st of May to 5th of May off, then work 6th of May through to 10th of May.]
Comments say, “My former company, we had to work 10, rest 4, then work 6.”
“If you only have one day weekends, how come you get to rest for 5? Shouldn’t it be work 10, rest 4, work 6?”
“That’s not too bad. My company just released an announcement that we only get 2 days off for Labour Day (we have to work 10 days in a row, get 2 days off, then come back and work another 8 days, I was blown away).”
#Yiwu charters flight for overseas businessmen #Overseas businessmen arrive in Yiwu in groups to buy buy buy. “During the Canton Fair, Zhejiang Yiwu chartered flights to invite overseas businessmen to Yiwu. Yesterday (25th of April) afternoon, the first batch of businessmen arrived in Yiwu. Over 95% of this group are composed of people who were coming to China for the first time or coming to Yiwu for the first time. In 4 days, they are going to frequently make purchases in Yiwu. There are many signature stores which do a mix of wholesale and retail in Yiwu, so overseas businessmen get to experience the flexibility of “wholesale prices for single items”.”
Comments say, “This is why they make more money every year, and some places only lose business every year.”
“Forget foreigners. Anyone would leave from Yiwu with bags upon bags like they’d just went there to stock up.”
“Yiwu businessmen are really good at running a business.”
“”After Covid, I get sick every time I leave the door.”
I told them, “You won’t get sick if you wear a mask.”
And someone replied, “Let’s forget whether or not masks even work for a second, you just can’t wear them in some scenarios like eating, sleeping, doing facial recognition, or getting a check up.”
This is the problem.
Some people keep getting sick despite wearing masks. Why?
Because they’re not wearing their masks properly, like there’s a gap or their nose is exposed, etc. A lot of people don’t know how to wear a mask right.
Or, they’ll wear a mask but continue eating out, or get sick from family members.
All of this can make masks ineffective.
So, during Covid or flu season, aside from correctly wearing you mask, you need to watch out for other points like:
Try not to eat out during risky season.
When eating at work, you can use an air purifier or set up a fan to blow right in your face as an aid.
Or find a space where you can be alone to eat.
And you can prevent getting sick from family members by:
If there are especially sickly people in your family, you might want to live separately.
If not, get a good air purifier for your house.
If you can, wear a mask even at home during high risk seasons.
Eat separately.
Most people don’t wear a mask to bed, so get a good air purifier for your bedroom.
This might be a big hard for a normal person, so it’s up to you how much you want to do.
Getting sick or getting long Covid is hell, not just for your body, but for your mind too. And it’s expensive.
You might go through all that suffering and all your money and not even get any better by the end of it.
So you have to decide for yourself if you’d rather be sick or rather stay in quarantine.”
Comments say, “Drinking water and facial recognition isn’t that bad, just do it quickly. The concentration right now isn’t so high that you can get sick from pulling down your mask for a few seconds. Anyone who complains about this doesn’t actually wear a mask.”
“I’ve been training in a 35 people classroom for 5 days. Just get a spot near the door where you get good air flow, keep your N95 welded to your face, spray your nose every 3 hours, and sanitise everything. Right now I’m perfectly healthy except that my ears hurt so much they’ve went numb.”
“You can try a spray-on mask when it’s not realistic to wear a full mask, and keep social distancing.”
“Got an Uber in Denver yesterday, with the driver speaking in very broken English. He was super friendly though. Half way through my ride, a really strong smell of marijuana came through, and he frowned and asked me, “Can you smell that? That’s marijuana. Crazy! Colorado is crazy!”
I took the opportunity to ask him, “Where are you from?”
He said he’s from Milan, Italy, and he’s been in America for 10 years.
I asked if pot was legal in Italy and he said it’s not. And then he said, “I don’t understand Americans. They’re not my people. America is good for work, but business? No good.”
I asked him, “Do you still want to go back to Italy?”
And he was like, “No, no, no, you know the mafia? There’s mafia in Italy.”
But he couldn’t explain in English just how the mafia was actually affecting his life.
I asked him how he thought of food in America, and he yelled really loud, “Mama mia! Very bad! Maybe good for you, but very, very bad for me.”
He told me about how his son bought a burger from McDonalds, and he took one sniff of the beef and knew he couldn’t eat it. He tried giving it to his dog, and his dog sniffed it and walked away. He said, “If it’s bad for my dog, more bad for me.”
He also told me there weren’t many Italians in Denver. There are more of them in major cities in other states. A lot of them came to America to flee from the mafia. Italians are good cooks, so they open restaurants, so there are a lot of Italian restaurants here.”
Comments say, “The mafia still affects normal people this much in this day and age? I thought they only existed in movies.”
“Ahhhh are you also here to attend AERA?”
“That burger part was hilarious.”
#Make up work “All good things change. How did makeup work come about? Japan started it first, and it was super successful, they just called it a different name. Japan calls it Golden Week. They combine Spring Festival, 1st of May, and Independence Day plus the weekend into a huge 7-day holiday, and this made the Japan tourism industry take off. That year, the number of domestic tourists multiplied by around three fold, tourism income doubled. At the time, Japan’s economy was in the dumps, and this was a national-level miracle. It didn’t result in “more work, more discomfort, and disrupted the market”, and nobody complained about it.”
Comments say, “Are you joking right now? What they have is a bridge holiday. They don’t need to make up for it later. Stop bullshitting.”
“What Japan has is a bridge holiday. Like if Thursday is a public holiday and you get a day off, to join it with the weekend, they’ll just give you Friday off too. You don’t have to make up for it. The key part is that you don’t have to make up for it!!”
“Basically, it’s just a tug of war between pro and con. Are there more pros? Or are there more cons? You can’t make everyone happy. I think so far, make up work is probably more pros than cons. We just have too many people. If even 100 million people out of 1.4 billion are unhappy, that’s still more people than most countries in the world has population.”
“I made a friend in Sophomore year, but we kinda drifted apart in Junior year because we didn’t sit together anymore. She suddenly messaged me this in the middle of the night. Just wanted to ask everyone on here, what’s your opinion?”
Friend: “Oh, also, are you a patriot? I feel like you say a lot of things that aren’t very patriotic, but I’m a very, very patriotic person. I study to make China great again. I work hard to make China stronger. I always love my country—China. I really, really love this piece of land. I love it so much. I also love the party. I love the Chinese Communist Party. I have been working hard these past 19 years so I can join the party. If you think all the slander you’ve said about China is true, then I think we’re not right for each other. After al, my auntie said that people like this usually come from bad families. And my friend said that if you explode [that is, get banned/arrested], your blood might get on me, so I should stay away from you.”
Friend: “By the time I realised, I’ve been thinking about this for a long time.”
OP: “? You’re asking me if I’m a patriot? I don’t even know what to say.”
Friend: “Oh, you shouldn’t say all those bad things about China. You’ll get in trouble. Even if you really want to, wait until you’re not in school anymore. I’m scared. T_T”
OP: “What did I even say to make you scared? Why don’t you go report me? It’s 500K. [the reward you get for finding and reporting a spy]”
Friend: “My aunt said people like you don’t qualify as a spy so I won’t get any money. Spies wouldn’t be poor like you.”
OP: “Okay, okay, if that’s what you think of me, it’s not like we’re going to hang out anymore. Let’s just stay away from each other.”
Friend: “Are we still gonna be on the same team though? I’m just worried about my safety and my country. Maybe you should find [other girl’s name], she might still have a spot. Since it looks like you don’t really want to be on the same team as me.”
OP: “…I don’t think I’m going to do anything that’s harmful to my country.”
Friend: “Of course.”
OP: “Even if I was some kind of anti-social psycho”
Friend: “You wouldn’t succeed anyways. You probably just love other countries.”
OP: “I still wouldn’t have a reason to hurt others.”
Friend: “So about the team.”
OP: “And what kind of saint are you? Randomly coming at me and saying all this high and mighty horseshit. If you don’t want to be friends with me anymore, you can just say that. You don’t need to find some bullshit reason to put yourself on the moral high ground to judge me.”
OP: “Of course I’m not gonna team up with you.”
Friend: “Oh good! Everyone was against you joining anyways. I insisted on bringing you in.”
OP: “I was the one who approached you about this project. Why would you think this?”
Friend: “You just said so.”
OP: “And talking about everyone else?”
Friend: “No need to thank me. All I did was speak up for you.”
OP: “Yeah. Wow. You’re so kind.”
Friend: “Yeah. Everyone says this about me. I think so too. My friends just don’t want me to get infected.”
OP: “K.”
Friend: “Have a good night!”
OP: “Bringing everyone else into it again. You must be a saint, to go around judging people like this. I’ve been wanting to go to bed this whole time.”
Comments say, “I feel like she’s not mentally well…”
“Well, she’s really bitchy [colloquial term for this in China is “green tea”], but she’s also really red. So maybe she’s red tea.”
“In a real war, this type of person would turn Quisling first.”
