04/16/25 - First clarification, I’m not going to discuss any of the evidence.
“A lot of lawyers can’t shut the hell up about sexual consent. I don’t deny that sexual consent is a woman’s freedom and right. But if a woman consents if she likes a man or the man can bring her more value and profit. And she doesn’t consent if the man can’t bring her enough of what she wants.
Then how is this type of consent different from women turning themselves into merchandise? They’ll consent if they get a high enough price, and not consent if they can’t? Like some kind of prostitute? Can anyone explain this to me?
In the case of the Shanxi Datong Engagement Rape case, on the 1st of May, the couple got engaged. On the 2nd of May, they have intercourse and the woman accuses him of rape. The reason is that she wanted to wait until marriage. They’re not young anymore. They know that engagement means they’re going to get married soon, right? They’re gonna be a married couple? What’s the big deal about waiting until marriage then? Why get engaged if you don’t want to have premarital sex?
Is she treating this engagement like a transaction?
If she doesn’t like the guy, and he can’t provide what she wants (for example, refusing to add her name to the deed to his house), the woman feels like her consent was violated. If that’s the case, why bother getting engaged with this guy? Why not just refuse him?
The guy isn’t completely in the right in this case either. Traditionally, we all believe that if two people are engaged, then they’re an item. These traditional views screwed this young man.
He has no idea that women can play around with consent so much and actually accuse him of rape.
So, getting married is like going through a Trial of the Heavens. If you pass, you’ll have a happy family and happy life. And if you can’t, then you’ll end up divorced or maybe in prison.
Sharpen your eyes and take care of yourself.”
Comments say, “You’re the only one assuming that women consent for the sake of money. That’s a huge prejudice in and of itself.”
“Stop talking. Look at what the women in your comment section is saying. Promise me, don’t be a cuck. From now on, no such thing as ladies first. Only family can make a man give selflessly anymore.”
“You didn’t read the police announcement? Burnt curtains? Dragged back into the apartment? What do you call this? Even if they were actually married, this would count as rape.”
“Can’t have sex even if you’re engaged or married, but the woman can take your bride price and add her name to your house? And then divorce you for “irreconcilable differences”? That’s a scam.”
“I know two people who blew 10 million.
The first was a guy whose house was demolished to be rebuilt. He got paid out 8.7 million and immediately bought himself a luxury car and became addicted to mahjong. Ate out all the time, and even invested in a hundred mu of orchards with someone. In just three short years, he went through all his money, and the orchard was losing money due to bad management too, so he had to go back to square one and start pulling on connections to find a job.
The other was used to be a successful long-haul trucking owner. He pulled out in time before high speed rail started and had over 14 million in savings, wealth management accounts, and stocks. But after pulling out, he kept trying to start businesses in other fields, restaurants, fruit plantations in Laos, cattle ranching, bed and breakfasts, etc. And after a whole bunch of work, not only did he lose all his savings, he ended up owing the bank a ton too.
Supposedly, when a village is slated for demolishing, people start making friends with the villagers early, and as soon as the reimbursement funds come down, these supposed friends will try to get the villagers to invest in business. In a couple of years, they run out of money, and their friends disappear. They’ve went onto the next village slated for demolishing. They’re probably organised with a plan.
So long as rich people don’t mess around, he’ll always be rich. If poor people don’t mess around, they’ll always be poor.
If you had that much money and just saved it in CDs at a bank, you’d be financially independent. So long as you don’t get any ideas, don’t gamble, then you won’t need to worry about the rest of your life. All I can say is, some people are too weak to hold onto wealth.
As soon as their reimbursement comes in, they start floating. They think they can do anything. They think they can buy anything. Everything feels like small change. Don’t ask me how I know, I’ve got reimbursement funds myself.
If you have money, you need to take a pause and do some charity, collect karma for yourself and that’s the only way you can advance. A lot of successful people mistake good luck for skill.
I have a relative who’s been smart since childhood. Without any help from his family, he was able to get a successful career and buy a house in Shenzhen. Then he got addicted to online gambling, sold his house, lost his business, mortgaged his houses and properties in his hometown for money, maxed out his credit cards, borrowed money from everyone. Now he’s in his 50s. His kids are adults too. And he still doesn’t have his own house. With the environment like this, he’ll probably never turn his life around.”
Comments say, “In my neighbouring village, 70-80% of the young people lost all their money in gambling, and that’s a demolished village.”
“So, getting rich quick isn’t true wealth. Only the money you manage to hold onto is wealth.”
“People can only make money within their intelligence. Don’t get too ambitious if you ever get a big windfall, or you’ll lose it really quickly!”
#Jingdong and Meituan simultaneously begin fast retail. “On the 15th of April, Meituan officially released their quick retail brand, “Meituan FlashBuy”. Meituan FlashBuy has been a service that began in 2018 internally in Meituan. So far, Meituan’s non-food sales has reached over 18 million per day. At the same time, Jingdong announced that they have exceeded 5 million takeout orders. At the same time, due to the fast growth of the “instant delivery” service, Jingdong is going to pay full insurance and 401K for all delivery drivers. Meituan and Jingdong announced key growth in their business on the same day, undoubtedly escalating the competition in the quick retail and takeout market, pushing the industry to innovation and development, bringing higher quality and faster service to consumers.”
Comments say, “Hahaha, I’m all for it, let’s involute.”
“OMG, are they that strong?”
More stories about Sanya vacations [where various scuba diving companies were exposed for extorting people to buy photos or not letting them come up for air]:
“They kept asking me if I wanted photos. I said no, and they wouldn’t let me up and I couldn’t breathe. I gave in and said I’d take photos and they finally let me up to take a breath of air. It’s such a scam.”
“Sanya Bureau of Tourism is staying quiet. I guess they don’t lack for tourists. Feel free to take your vacations in Shandong instead!!!”
“My son was only 5-years-old at the time, and I could hear him crying even underwater. But tears are useless. I told them that my son doesn’t want any photos. No use. You have to go through all the poses they tell you. I was scared out of my mind. I hate them.”
“They wanted 988RMB from me for this shit.”
“You don’t fight back even after you’re on land?”
“It’s not my home territory. I’m too scared to.”
“You did the right thing. Safety first.”
“You should’ve called the cops. It’s really scary. I’m a Sanya local but I never go to these activities because I’m scared. I don’t know how to swim XD”
“2016, in Sanya, I had just gotten into the water and finished taking my photos, when they yanked my oxygen tube out. I started struggling in the water and he pulled me out. It was only about 10 minutes in total, and I spent over 1000RMB. I called and made a complaint but nothing ever came of it.”
“When I went to Wuzhizhou Island, my girlfriend couldn’t swim, and the worker told my tour guide outright, “What’s the point of coming over if she can’t get in the water?” A young couple in our group told me after they got back on land that they were forcibly pushed underwater, and a chill went down my spine. I was so freaked out.”
“Wow, I must be pretty brave then. I went diving in Sanya and it was advertised as 30 minutes, but the guy only let me dive for 10 minutes. I only saw a little bit of fish and corals before he made me go up. I was mad and floated up and found their manager to make a complaint, and he really reluctantly took me diving for another 30 minutes.”
“Every year, someone exposes the industry, but they’ve never change.”
“Me too, with the Sanya Aegean Tourism Group, they pulled out my oxygen tube, and water immediately rushed into my mask. I was terrified I was going to die in that vast ocean. And then he pulled me up. Don’t go. It’s so scary.”
“It’s the same in Dalian. I went in 22 to scuba dive and didn’t spend money to buy their masks, so he kept pushing me down and wouldn’t let me up.”
“Every year, tourists die in Sanya. No one knows if it’s an accident, or if these groups accidentally killed the tourists who didn’t want to get photos or videos. There’s so many things never looked into.”
“I was on my knees, with him on top of my back, holding me underwater. I heard him tell my husband that I wanted videos taken. I kept struggling until I managed to get out from under him and floated to the top and yelled that I didn’t want any fucking videos.”
“It’s my scariest memory.”
“It’s suffocating. They won’t let you actually die, but you’ll feel like you died.”
“I don’t know how to swim. They pulled out my oxygen, and I went into rage mode. I figured I was gonna take someone with me, so I pulled his tube out too, grabbed him, and did my best to sink to the bottom.”
“I kept making the gesture for going up, but they never let me go up. I was so freaked out that I started pulling on him, and he finally let me up. If I wasn’t threatening his safety, he would’ve dragged me to the bottom.”
“I brought a knife with me, and before I went into the water, I told them I wasn’t taking any photos and if anyone tries to touch me, I’m going to stab them. Nobody forced any photos on me.”
“Why is everyone in this comment section so secretive? Nobody called the cops? I remember this being on the trending hashtags last year, but there was no followup. How scary.”
“The two diving instructors were so weasly. Single person underwater photoshoot was 600, couples was 1200. He asked me if I wanted photos and I refused. After a while, he told me and my friend separately that, “Your friend wanted to take photos with you.” I was underwater, couldn’t see where my friend was at all. It was raining that Memorial Day weekend, it was super cold underwater, and I just wanted to get back on land as soon as possible. Since my friend wanted photos, I agreed to it. After we got back up on land, I asked her why she wanted photos, and she said she thought I wanted them.”
“Boundary Island isn’t bad. My sister and BIL went diving, and I took my kid and my niece to do an underwater walk. My niece got scared as soon as she went in the water and refused to keep going, and the coach said I shouldn’t waste my opportunity and had me walk around by myself.”
“The cousin of the guy involved in the Shanxi Datong Engagement Rape Case exposed all the details of the case on Lawyer Guo’s livestream. It was very through, all the details were there, and I finally understand this case now. I see the logic in this case that I just couldn’t wrap my head around before.
First clarification, I’m not going to discuss any of the evidence, because I’m not very good at biology. If I tried to talk about the evidence in a rape case, you might be disappointed. It’s just not in my capability.
Why can’t people understand this case? Because we all live in a modern society and think that premarital sex is just a personal choice. Having premarital sex doesn’t lower your value as a person. But you have to throw away those views when looking at this case, and put yourself back in the Ming Dynasty, and view gender like you’re in ancient, feudalistic society. Why?
Because this explains all the choices made by both parties.
First of all, both parties here, and their respective families, agree that women are more valuable if they are virgins before marriage. Forget whether that’s correct or not, that’s what they believe. The reason is that the guy’s cousin said he’s often “dry humped” her without penetration. Why? It’s to preserve her “virginity”.
Lawyer Guo: “These two are pretty conservative, huh?”
Then they got engaged, but the bride price wasn’t fully paid off yet, because later on, the woman’s mom talked to the guy and told him to sell his pigs to pay the rest of the bride price. And according to the woman’s statement, after their engagement lunch, after getting home, the guy started humping her again and just slipped inside. The woman ran to get a shower and became furious.
Why furious? Because her virginity was destroyed (at least, she thought so), and yet the guy hadn’t finished paying his bride price yet. If he just refused to pay up the second half of it, then she’d have lost out bit. And even if she broke the engagement, she’s not a virgin anymore so it’s harder to find a new partner.
Again, forget whether or not any of this is correct. That’s her logic.
The woman thinks, “I’ve been screwed here.” So she demands that he add her name to his house. You can think of this as reimbursement for destroying her virginity before marriage. The woman has brought this up before, but only once (according to the guy’s cousin), and if he refused, that’s fine. She’s still willing to get engaged to him.
Again, don’t use your modern day logic to think about this case, and be like, “Why would she be willing to marry someone who raped her?” Their logic is that, “You’ve scratched up the product, so you have to buy it! And you have to pay damages!” This happens in every country’s history…
So the guy and the woman start arguing, and the woman even burnt down the curtains and furniture. Why? Because she didn’t get what she wanted. He didn’t agree to her price.
Why would she set the curtains on fire because he wouldn’t agree? Because that’s the only way she can get anyone to believe that although she’s engaged and she went with the guy to his house, she’s still a “virtuous virgin”, so that she can find a better partner next time.
And then her parents come out and say, “You have to pay all the bride price and add her name and blah blah blah.” At this point, the man readily agrees that he had sex with her, and even that it was nonconsensual. Why? Because in his logic, he’s slept with her. Now she’s a dirty whore and nobody is going to want her anymore. She can only marry me. He can only achieve this effect by admitting to what happened. All the negotiations later on is built on this logic.
Some people ask, “Isn’t that selling your daughter?” Well, that’s what ancient societies are like. You can’t touch her before marriage, and if you do, you have to take responsibility, including full bride price, adding her name, and everything they’d agreed on. If you didn’t agree to those terms, why would you touch her?
Forget how fantastical this logic is, it’s self-consistent. And even the guy recognises this logic. Why else would he only hump her before? Because he wanted to create a chance for an ambush, to lower the possibility of the woman moving onto someone else, so he can get away with not paying bride price.
I don’t know why the guy refused to add her name in the end. Maybe he thought he had dirt on her, maybe he had the wrong read on the situation. So he went to prison…
So, this case is the result of a bunch of unspoken context coming together and creating a wild story. In alternate universes, if we changed details of the context, what would’ve happened?
Ideal logic: Woman doesn’t want bride price or to add her name. Then maybe they’re just not into each other and never start dating, or maybe they live on happily ever after. But we know which possibility is more likely, right?
Conservative logic: The guy pays full bride price, waits until marriage to have sex with the girl, nothing happens. The guy doesn’t pay full bride price, the woman demands to break the engagement, at most they have a financial dispute, but it’s not a criminal matter.
Strong woman theory: She doesn’t resist premarital sex, but still demands full bride price. That means that no matter how many times he has sex with her, he still has the pay the same money. So either the relationship doesn’t work out and they argue over the bride price, or they get together at full bride price.
Weak woman theory: She resists premarital sex but still thinks that since he already slept with her, she has no choice but to marry him now. Do you think he would still pay a cent of bride price in that scenario? Or add her name?
If you still can’t wrap your head around it, you can change “breaking her virginity” to “getting her pregnant”, and all of a sudden, it’s a lot more commonplace, huh?
Of course, why he was sentenced for rape, how the evidence was evaluated, I can’t tell you that with my level of expertise.
But the base logic of this case, I gotta say, they truly are a match made in heaven when it comes to their ideals. It’s hard to find young people who think this way in these times.”
Comments say, “But in the police report, they said that the woman set the curtains on fire to get the man to go fetch water to save his house, so that she’d have an opportunity to run. The logic makes sense to me. I don’t think she was deliberately creating evidence of her non-consent.”
“You got one detail wrong. I’ve read news that before the engagement, the man signed a promise that he’d add her name and pay the other half of the bride price after marriage. Because he raped her, they demanded that he add her name right now, but the other half of the bride price can still wait until marriage.”
“Adding her name was a part of their agreement before anything ever happened. “Add her name after one year of marriage.” It’s not at all like what this cousin said, that it was only “brought up once.” Based on how many other lies this guy’s mom has told, it’s pretty likely that this cousin is lying too.”
