A compilation of comments underneath a video about Pakistani women and their veils:
“I feel like Pakistani women must have great skin, since they never see any sunlight.”
“I wanna dress like this when I go out in the summer too.”
“It’s perfect for socially awkward people.”
“Yeah, this is not a bad idea for sun protection wear—it looks pretty convenient to throw on.”
“I want to go live there. Then I don’t have to wash my hair every day anymore.”
“It does feel safe and fair. Once you throw on your veil, you’re just another woman.”
“Let me go. It’ll cover up my baldness and protect me from the sun and I don’t have to bother with makeup.”
“Honestly, I want to buy one for myself. That way, no one will find out how fat and dark and ugly I am XD”
“After my uncle emigrated overseas, he gifted his house to my dad. A little while back, the house was eminent domain’d and we were paid 8.8 million in reimbursement. My dad told my uncle about this right away, and when he heard, his face fell. He thinks that he should get a share of the money.
My dad was put in a difficult position by my uncle’s demands. Sure, he gave us the house for free out of the goodness of his heart. I feel complicated about this too. But watching my uncle get increasingly upset about the reimbursement, I couldn’t help but speak up and refute his points. But my uncle just got increasingly angry, told me I was being disrespectful, when I’m just trying to insist on the facts.
In this fight, my mom became the mediator. She brought up giving my uncle a part of the reimbursement to quell the fight. My uncle was still displeased about this plan, and felt like a million wasn’t nearly enough. In the negotiation, my uncle made increasingly ridiculous demands, until my dad lost patience too. Finally, my uncle left in a huff and threatened to sue. A few days later, we got a notice from the courts that my uncle’s taking us to court.
We had a big argument in court, and finally, the judge made a decision—we had to pay my uncle 2 million out of our reimbursement. We felt very angry and helpless about this decision, but we can’t change what the court’s ordered. From that point, we’ve went no-contact with my uncle, and the 2 million has just become a transaction between our families.
All of this has left me feeling very heavy, like family is so fragile in front of money. My uncle’s greed and our fights have left me depressed and made me understand the distance between people. Maybe this is an unfortunate incident, but it’s taught me a lot about reality.
Maybe, once upon a time, we all thought that family can stand up to money, but reality isn’t so. When faced with a fortune, the greed and desire in human nature will cover up any love they have for our family. We’re all very disappointed and angry at my uncle, but that’s also made us treasure those we have a true bond with even more.
In the course of this law suit, we’ve recognised the power of the law and the fairness of court decisions. Even though we don’t think the decision was fair at all, we had to accept it, because the law is equal, it goes beyond people’s emotions. Maybe this is a lesson for us too, to teach us the cruelty of reality and the weakness of people.
Although I’ve been kind of down lately, I’ve understood how to make a choice between family and money now. We’ll be more careful and rational when making a choice between fortune or emotion, and treasure the people who love us more. In this world, family is the truest treasure you can have!”
Comments say, “This family is so greedy! They should’ve given half to the uncle!”
“You guys should’ve been paying rent. You’re a whole family of vampires. I can’t believe you guys wouldn’t agree even though he only wanted a portion of the money.”
“He could’ve demanded all 8.8 million and been in the right.”
An announcement from Blizzard’s official account that they’ve reached a new agreement with Netease and will be returning to China with their beloved games.
Comments say, “I’ve been summoned. I will answer the call, like I always have.”
“466 days ago, we said that, “Those who believe will be rewarded.” Now, Blizzard is coming back, our wishes have become true. Praise the wind for guiding our path, praise the stars for lighting our way.” [I think the second part is some kind of saying from a Blizzard game, but I haven’t actually played any of them.]
“They’re fucking around with their players like they’re monkeys.”
A post on “an extraordinary beautiful female rapist” [quote from weibo], “This weeks’ case wasn’t complicated at all—just simple female on male rape. There were multiple victims too. The key point is, this female rapist is really pretty. Here’s a comment from the internet, “I feel like even the blurring can’t hide her beauty.”
It sounded so much like some kind of a comedy routine that I’m attaching her photos and screenshots from the program to prove it’s not something made up by tiktok).”
The screenshots show the rapist saying, “I just couldn’t help myself. I was just full of need and had to vent it somewhere. There’s all these men wandering the streets late at night—they knew what they were asking for.”
The program questions, “With so many victims, why didn’t any of them call the police?”
Comments say, “If you need somewhere to vent, you can check out A-chan’s gentlemanly toys store! [link to online store]”
“It has to be made up, right? The “Confess and you will be forgiven” is printed out and stuck on, and there’s a watermark on the left saying, “educational program explaining the law, not trying to lead anyone astray”.”
“Is female on male rape even a crime by Chinese laws?”
A tiktok video of the amount of beef they give you at a noodle shop:
Comments say, “If he accidentally dropped in a third piece of beef, would he pick it out?”
“Hahahahaha, I thought he was going to dump the whole spoon in!”
“How much beef do you want for an 8 RMB bowl of noodles? You should be glad there are any meat in it at all.”
“Came upon this Xiuhe dress while scrolling Sister Mei’s [Chinese actress] ugly outfits. A lot of women’s clothing nowadays not only secretly shrink their hip and waist sizes, they’re also not giving you enough fabric in the chest area, and almost nobody’s talking about this. Back in the day, they’d always give extra fabric around the chest. Now, you can go up in sizes, but they don’t make any particular area of the clothes any looser.”
Comments say, “Nowadays, they just assume women are all A-cups.”
“Oh my god, this outfit is cringey from head to toe. The headdress is closer to Japanese design, the size is horrible on her. It’s ugly from the front and in profile.”
“This is why seamstresses back in the day have to take all your measurements. Nobody cares anymore (unless you’re buying custom-ordered haute couture). And all the models they find are flat-chested.”
A tiktok video of…some kind of…fruit? OP says, “At first, I thought this lady was eating green buns. I only realised these were fruit when I looked closer. She tears open the fruit and there’s…nothing inside? What’s the point of eating these? In all my decades on Earth, this is the first time I’ve ever seen this, not to mention tasting it. Anyone know what kind of fruit this is?”
Comments say, “Tea tree tumours.”
“You gotta believe in the tastes of our ancestors. Anything that isn’t already popular nowadays all taste like shit.”
“It’s tea fruit. Have you guys never heard of tea oil before?”
“I went to the community clinic today and got five boxes of Rosuvastatin Calcium Tablets. They cost a total of 362.5 RMB. After insurance, I had to pay 94.25 RMB. That’s an average of 72.5 RMB per box. I looked at the receipt after I got home and was shocked that a Chinese-made generic brand would be so expensive. I searched on the internet, and none of the pharmacies around me carry it, but out of state, they sell these tablets for 15 RMB or so. On Jingdong [online shopping platform like Amazon], you can buy it for 13 RMB per box. Even more shockingly, you can buy it on Tianmao [another online shopping platform] for just 6.9 RMB.
I saw a family doctor at the community clinic and health insurance covers 90% of the costs, but I still had to pay 94.25 RMB out of pocket. That’s 18.45 RMB per box. If I didn’t use my health insurance and just bought it off the internet, I could’ve saved 29.25 RMB! Or I could’ve saved 59.75 RMB on Tianmao!
It’s made me start to doubt whether health insurance is helping us at all, or just trying to get money out of us? Maybe someone who knows more about this can give me an answer? Or the health insurance departments might see this and give me an explanation. If my community clinic is doing something shady for more profits, I hope they’ll get investigated thoroughly.
TL;DR: Sometimes, health insurance won’t actually make things cheaper for you. Sometimes, it might be bringing you stress because of high out-of-pocket costs. And how our health insurance processes claims should be more transparent and reasonable, to prevent anyone from making off with our money. I hope more people will start paying attention to our healthcare system and make it more fair and reasonable.”
Comments say, “I’ve also discovered that the same medicine will be more expensive if I use health insurance than not. I have no idea why this happens. Have the authorities not said anything about it yet?”
“Community clinics are all privately owned.”
“At a proper hospital, this medicine is 3.5 RMB a box, health insurance covers 70% of it, but you can only get 2 boxes at a time.”
“We still have a long way to go in fighting medical corruption.”
“We need to be alert that hospitals and other departments are taking advantage of health insurance. They’re taking advantage of the fact that people with insurance don’t tend to care how much things cost when they go to the hospital, since it’s all covered, so they don’t look at prices at all.”
