03/05/25 - I’m too scared to put my phone on their scales.
A compilation of foods that taste great even just simply boiled or steamed:
“You should try crown daisies. Wash them clean, cut them into chunks, sprinkle on some flour and shake it up, then add more flour and steam it for 10 minutes. Once it’s done, sprinkle some sesame oil on top and add some chilli oil and salt and mix it up.”
“Fushun County’s corn, called “sticky white jade”. It’s fragrant and chewy and sweet. I can eat three in one sitting. Even the seeds are more expensive than other corn seeds. After you’ve had them, you won’t even want whatever Yunnan finger corn or fruit corn or blue corn or Jiawo corn. Our boss contacted the village and everyone got an order. Every single person wanted sackfuls to bring home to gift to people. They don’t grow much, the yield is really low, so you hardly ever find it out of state. I can’t even buy some from Shenyang.”
“I’ll mention something I made all the time—pan-fried dumplings + eggs, heat in rice cooker for 13 minutes, and it’ll be all crispy n the bottom too.”
“Henan marinaded noodles. The longer you steam them, the better they get.”
“Obviously a bowl of white rice plus saliva amylase.”
“Broccoli and tomatoes and an egg, plus some water and a drop of oil, and braise everything. It’s super tasty! All it takes is a tiny bit of soy sauce, vinegar, and salt. It doesn’t look very good but it’s super tasty. I even drank all the soup.”
“Shrimp. It’s got tons of protein and tastes great and is easy to cook. You can just steam it or boil it or whatever and dip it in some sauce.”
“Oh, tons, you can steam pork neck meat with soy bean sauce, steamed cabbages, garlic steamed eggplants, steamed chicken dipped in water, soy bean sauce steamed ribs, steamed winter melon, etc, etc.”
“You can even make a pot of braised pork belly and freeze it in the fridge, and bring it out and reheat it with bread and you can have rou jia mo [basically Chinese burgers, shredded meat inside steamed buns].”
“Chinese yams. They’re so good steamed.”
“Asparagus! Asparagus! Buy the premium kind off of Temu and cut off the very bottom bit, and blanche it in boiling water and sprinkle on a bit of soy sauce and you can start eating! It’s fresh and sweet and don’t need stir-fried at all!”
“Baby pumpkins.”
“Potatoes! Potatoes!”
“Potatoes really are delicious. You can steam them or grill them and they’re tasty without any condiments even.”
“When you’re cooking rice, cut up a sweet potato into chunks and put it in the rice. It’ll be sweet and fragrant and you can eat two big bowls of rice without anything to go with it.”
“When you’re cooking rice, you can throw in sweet potato, sausages, marinaded salt-crusted chicken, dried chicken wings, smoked meat, all in the same pot.”
“Cut the skin off of some pork belly, throw it into a pot of cold water, bring it to a boil and skim off the scum, add some salt, and keep cooking until all the water is dry and each side of the pork belly is slightly golden brown. Cut into thin slices and it’ll blow your mind.”
“Cut a zucchini into chunks, steam for 15 minutes, and sprinkle on a bit of fish and soy bean sauce.”
“Microwave an apple for 10 minutes.”
“Chicken drumsticks steamed with cordyceps is really tasty!”
“Crabs, shrimp, potatoes, silver pomfret, any kind of flatfish, corn, eggplants. You can steam them and sprinkle on whatever condiment or even add nothing and they’re tasty.”
“And mantis shrimp and all kinds of shellfish.”
“Spinach. Add some garlic chilli pepper sauce and I can eat a whole bucketful. Eggs are good too.”
“White-boiled shrimp. Put a ton of green onions and ginger into a pot and then add in fresh, washed shrimp. Cook on high heat for 7 minutes, then simmer for 3 minutes, and it’s ready in 10 minutes.”
“Steamed beef, steamed ribs, steamed fish, steamed smoked pork.”
“Most seafood.”
“When it comes to stuff that’s delicious with some simple steaming, you gotta include smoked sausages. Sichuan smoked sausage and Hubei Enshi’s smoked sausages are both amazing.”
“And when it comes to stuff that’s delicious with some simple boiling, you gotta include instant noodles. I’ve been obsessed with Jin Ramen lately.”
“Eggs! Boil it and it’s boiled eggs, steam it and it’s egg cake, fry it and it’s scrambled eggs, poach it and it’s a poached egg.”
“Potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, pumpkins, winter melon, spinach, hongtai choy, baby napa cabbage, sponge gourd, calabash, shiitake mushrooms, snow fungus, snow peas, broccoli, eggs, sweet potato leaves, lettuce, carrots, enoki mushrooms, cucumbers, choy sum, tomatoes, apples, pears, oranges, figs, these are all foods that are delicious simply steamed.”
#Luoyang promotes turning phones into standard weights. #Luoyang’s new ideas in defeating unfair scales. “We have learned that the Luoyang City Market Supervision Bureau has been promoting “turning phones into standard weights” throughout the whole city. Workers will use a licensed standard electronic scale to weigh the citizenry’s phones and put a sticker on the back that labels the phone’s weight. The phone then turns into a standard weight. While shopping, citizens can put their phones on the merchant’s scale to compare, so they can discover any unfair scales and report it to 12315 [phone number for the Bureau].”
Comments say, “Good idea!”
“But if your phone is on the scale, how are you going to take video evidence? Why not just give out standard weights to people?”
“I’m too scared to put my phone on their scales.”
“I remember several years ago, I heard teachers say that there was guy in some Teaching University that was from a poor family.
He also took on several teaching jobs, so that not only did his parents not have to give him any allowance, he could actually send some money home to cover expenses.
And in the end, this guy literally died from overwork…
After hearing about this, I’ve known since I was in uni that you can’t rush to make some money.
#Sophomore student works three jobs after school and earns 15K in a year.”
Comments say, “No matter how young and healthy you are, you can’t work too hard.”
“You really can die from overwork.”
“I was hoping to hear a story about a guy turning his life around, but he just died.”
“63-year-old, 43kg mother-in-law lives together with 33-year-old, 65kg daughter-in-law. One of them takes care of the chores and the kid, the other one takes care of being pretty. Netizens say, “Hospitals aren’t worried about fat people, they’re worried about underweight people. When it comes down to it, your fat could save your life!””
Comments say, “She has a great figure!”
“This is so me.”
“I’ve know a lady also 60-years-old, also super thin. She often has skin molting off of her face, like when you’re using some kind of medical cream and it makes your skin peel off, so the skin on her face looks super smooth, but all the skin is accumulated in layers on her neck and it looks super scary.”
“A couple of days ago, someone on the internet asked me, “Why don’t young people date or get married nowadays?”
I think this person was looking for an answer of, “Feminism.”
But the answer I’m seeing is, “Economic recession.”
There’s a couple of examples.
Young girl A is dating online. She’s from an average family. The algorithm isn’t going to send her the highest quality of men. Most are working in the big city from out of state, having went to a decent university, and gotten a tech-related job.
She chatted to a few before the New Years, and one of them suddenly disappeared for a long time. When he reappeared again, he told her that he’d lost his job and is going through labour mediation. He said he would definitely win but he’s not going to get any money because his boss also doesn’t have any money left.
She had a few she was going to meet up with. One of them told her on the 8th that he knew he’d lose his job this year, he’s already getting ready to go through labour mediation, and just like the last guy, he’s going to win but he won’t get paid.
A couple of days later, he found another job, but he was very honest when he told her that right now, he wants to focus on his career and he doesn’t have time for anything else.
A understands completely, because she’s also a work horse drifting through society, despite graduating from a 985 University.
Young man B has something flirty going on with his coworker.
He gathered up his courage to confess his love.
And the girl says that she likes him too, but her family doesn’t want her marrying far away, and wants her to go back home and get a government job.
It’s true. There’s no way B can afford a house in the next 5-8 years.
The butterfly can’t even break out of its cocoon, much less star in Butterfly Lovers. [Famous romantic legend about two star-crossed lovers who couldn’t be together in this life-time, so transformed into butterflies upon death to spend the next lifetime with each other. It’s like Romeo and Juliet for Chinese people.]”
Comments say, “People who blame feminism assume that men still want to date, but the reality is, men aren’t looking to date right now either.”
“The economic is in recession, so dating and marriage is harder. For one, the pressures of life are greater so people don’t have time to date or marry. And for another, economic circumstances are a much more important criteria on the dating market, and people who aren’t well off can’t find a date, much less get married.”
“There used to be a lot of benefits to getting married. You get a house, your partner gets a hukou and a job, your kids get free childcare even if they’re under a year old. Now you don’t get shit.”
