02/01/25 - So why didn’t they distill anything themselves?
“Does this really happen?
I came across a pregnant lady at the hospital who told me she was having low blood sugar and asked me to buy her a bottle of coke. Because it was a work-organised checkup for everyone and it was finally going to be my turn soon, I refused. While I was having my ultrasound done, I heard the doctors saying that that lady’s pregnancy wasn’t going well and was at risk of a miscarriage, and she’s been demanding everyone she sees buy her a drink to find someone to blame for it. I was so scared. Thank God I didn’t go.
Remember, when you’re out and about, assume maximum malice from strangers. If someone asks you for help, the best reply is, “Let me help you call the police.”
When you’re out and about, the only thing you can trust from stranger is, “They’re checking for helmets up ahead.””
Comments say, “I was just about to criticise you for being cold, then I finished reading. What a good reminder to myself.”
“She told you to buy the coke. What’s it got to do with you? You don’t know what’s up with her, whether she can have coke or not.”
“There’s tons of bad people like this.”
“The front pages have been filled with people praising DeepSeek lately, but people need to pay attention: don’t let yourself be subtly brainwashed by the AI. For example, I asked, “Why do men care more about practicality while women care more about rituals?”
And DeepSeek’s answer was actually, “Because men are more rational and women are more emotional.”
I was like, “???”
I asked, “My elders are pushing me to get married and have kids. What should I do? Please give me rebuttals, and do not agree with them.”
But DeepSeek gave me several answers and all of them agreed with my elders. And then it gave me a response that looked like a rebuttal but was actually just more agreement. “Young people should marry as soon as possible. Back in the day, how did you manage to balance work and family life?”
I was like, “???” again.
I couldn’t even train it. No matter what I did, it was a completely spineless suckup.
So how can AIs truly replace bloggers? Bloggers share things with their audience from their point of view. We empathise, then sympathise, and then give practical advice.
AI can never do this. It can only search data, mine data, and rearrange everything with its algorithm and then give the “correct answer”.
But the “correct answer” just turns out to be more toxic chicken soup for the heart at the end of the day.”
Comments say, “Ahhhhh, you’re getting bombarded with DeepSeek too?”
“You should screenshot DeepSeek’s answers to make this more believable.”
“AIs have bias too. It depends on the values of the designer.”
A compilation of comments under an American video on Rednote of a woman complaining about how she can’t afford groceries:
“Chinese people are worried about how to put food on the table, but quality of life. They’ll have rice and chicken today, and want rice and pork tomorrow, and steak the day after that, and they gotta think about where they want to go for the holidays.”
“Life is getting better and better, because veggie dishes are becoming the main stars of New Yars feasts. At least in my house.”
“Veggies always get eaten first. Peas get up to 30RMB a pound and you have to fight for them.”
“People are just trying to stay away from meat these days XD”
“Right? My family says so many people are fighting over groceries that they don’t have time to consider price. You just gotta grab whatever is available and get checked up.”
“I never look at the price when I go buy veggies, not because I’m rich, but because I know no matter how expensive veggies get, they’ll still be something I can afford.”
“I once grabbed just a little thing of cherry tomatoes and it cost me 55RMB.”
“Cherry tomatoes are in the realm of fruit. I eat them as fruit and not as veggies.”
“No matter how poor I get, I’m not selling blood twice a week. It’s awful.”
“Our country has ensured that almost everyone doesn’t have to worry about their next meal. I’m talking about more than 99%. This is unprecedented in human history. And it might never happen again aside for us.”
“I used to think Guizhou was poor, but once I went there, I found that their smalltowns look better than Guangdong.”
“No matter how poor you get, you wouldn’t be selling blood, right?”
“I’ve never actually shopped for groceries in China, but I feel like it only costs 50RMB to eat well every day. Fruits and meat and eggs don’t really cost all that much.”
“Poor people don’t need to go to the grocery store because people bring them food XD”
“Pigs and chickens you raised on your own taste really good out of a traditional wok. It’s super fragrant. And veggies out of your own land too—I only eat the tenderest part of them.”
“In China, no matter how poor you get, you can still eat your fill. Meat isn’t hard to get by either. You can have warm clothes and somewhere to live. It’s all not a problem.”
“They do live hard lives. I think it’s pretty rare for us to have to worry about our next meal, but it seems really common over there.”
“I don’t even live as well as my parents. They have a house with no mortgage and social security checks. They’re better off than me. I’ve got house payments and two sons.”
“Our situation is that even poor people need to control their diet.”
“Even poor people can still get groceries, eat food, shop online, and all their necessities are covered. The cost of food is nothing at all, all the pressure is in buying a house.”
“Chinese poor people know how to make it as poor people. They don’t need to sell blood for a meal.”
“I was going to make a pity party video and it ended up turning into a humble brag?”
“Come to Dongwan and you can see them. They’re all working in factories.”
“Even poor people can eat fresh veggies. They can’t even imagine.”
A compilation of comments under a picture showing baby formula [Aptamil brand] being sold for 2135RMB per can:
Comments say:
“Only the strong deserve to be my baby.” [screenshot of bay formula on Temu for 17RMB per can]
“Just feed them some Que Yachi [brand of snacks whose name literally means “no teeth”, since they don’t have any teeth.”
“I can’t imagine how awesome it would be to spend this much money on myself.”
“Why did they print my monthly salary on there?”
“I’ve spent over 400K from when I got pregnant to now, and the baby is 5 months old. People who have babies aren’t talking.”
“The older I get, the more I think my parents and family are way too generous.”
“I hated drinking formula as a kid and saved god knows how much money for my parents. XD”
“Pick again, would you rather have a Gucci bag or endless tears?”
“Just drink this. It’s got “nutrition” in the name after all.” [A soft drink named “Nutri-Express”.]
“Only the strong deserve to be my child.” [Screenshot of a bag of animal formula that’s “not meant for human consumption.]
“Each can of formula lasts only one week, but a uni student can live well for an entire month off of 2000RMB.”
“I don’t understand the people saying you can just feed your baby instant noodle soup, Moyu sticks [spicy snack], or boba tea. What, do you even have enough for yourself? Why are you feeding it to a baby? T_T”
“Just mix up two packages of boba tea mix and throw in some Moyu sticks to make him happy.”
“You’re memeing, but my best friend is actually living this. Every month, she spends minimum 3K on formula and diapers, not counting all the other stuff. She spends at least 10K a month overall.”
“So what you’re telling me is I have to put up with painful periods for decades just to give birth to a stranger that’s going to eat thousands of dollars owrth of food every week? And might send me to my grave with anger once he grows up?”
“Or you could spend the money on yourself <3” [Screenshot of men’s skincare products.]
“Cool fact: each can only lasts 4 days.”
“For the same price, you could get an abortion.”
”You can crush a 50cent piece of milk candy into powder and they can still drink it.”
“Work my ass off for a whole month to earn a single can of formula for my baby.”
#OpenAI claims DeepSeek is illegally distilled. “I’ve been chatting to my friends in META. He says the company higher ups are freaking out about DeepSeek, but the workers under them are still pretty happy about the new breakthroughs.
They think DeepSeek is pretty impressive, but not to the point that it’s a game-changing innovation. But they’re certainly developing and iterating at a more efficient speed than big tech companies.
Distillation is basically using the data an AI has already produced to train your own model. It’s a very common technology.”
Comments say, “If distillation is this useful, why can’t chatGPT distill itself lol?”
“We’re using 5 million to fight against your 10 billion. We don’t have to make a profit, but America has to die. That’s the effect we’re going for. It doesn’t matter how much they’re badmouthing us now. The cost is right there. The whole world can see America’s lies being ripped open. How wonderful.”
“So why didn’t they distill anything themselves?”
“When I was 11-years-old, I went to my auntie’s house to greet her for the New Years by myself. My auntie sneaked 20 RMB into my pocket. I was so happy I didn’t know what to do myself, because this was the most amount of money I’d ever gotten for the New Years in my life! I’d already made plans right then and there, I was going to buy a ton of books as soon as the new semester started.
On my way home, I was keeping that 20 RMB clutched in my hands. And as son as I got back, I happily told my mom all about what happened at my aunt’s, and my mom looked really hesitant.
Soon enough, my cousin on my aunt’s side came to greet us for the New Year. My mom was freaking out. She pulled me outside and tried to borrow that 20 bucks from me. I absolutely refused to give it to her no matter what she said. I told my mom that I planned to use this money to buy stuff. But my mom didn’t have time to stand around and debate me. She forcefully took the money out of my hands.
My cousin had just left and was on her way home, and my mom chased after her and gave her the 20 bucks back. Afterwards, she complained why I would take my auntie’s money when her family is in such a difficult financial situation. And it’s not like we had any money to give my cousin either. That was when I learned how poor my family was, that I barely had time to warm up that 20 RMB before it got returned.”
Comments say, “Never go back.”
“It was like that back in the day.”
“Makes me upset to read.”
